Hagan Announces $44 Million in Science Awards for Triangle Area Universities

U.S. Senator Kay Hagan today announced that five Triangle area universities have received 74 awards worth $43.7 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to conduct research in a variety of academic areas.

"North Carolina is a leader in conducting groundbreaking research, and I'm pleased that Triangle-area universities are being recognized with these significant funding awards," Hagan said. "Investments in research and STEM education are key to ensuring our state and nation remain competitive in the 21st century global economy."

Among the awards is an $18.5 million award for a research project at North Carolina State University entitled "NSF Nanosystems Engineering Research Center for Advanced Self-Powered Systems of Integrated Sensors and Technologies (ASSIST)." Additionally, North Carolina Central University is receiving a $1.75 million award for a research project entitled "Implementation Grant: DREAM STEM-Driving Research, Entrepreneurship, and Academics through Mastering STEM." The NSF funds research and education in science and engineering, through grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements.
